Saint Mary’s Partners with Scout to Support Its International Student-Athletes at Every Level

Saint Mary’s draws Gaels from around the world, and now they’ve got a tax team to match. Scout’s 38-year IRS veteran Thad Madden leads one-on-one support so international athletes can navigate nonresident filing and tax treaties, and keep what’s theirs

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary’s College of California has announced a partnership with Scout, the financial technology company built specifically for athletes, with a focused commitment to supporting its international student-athletes — at both the program level and the individual level.

Few programs reflect the global nature of modern college athletics like Saint Mary’s. With a roster that draws talent from around the world, the Gaels face a financial challenge most departments are only beginning to understand: international athletes navigate a U.S. system that was never built for them, from nonresident tax status and tax-treaty rules to banking access and the reporting obligations that come with NIL income.

The partnership addresses that challenge on two fronts. At the department level, Scout gives Saint Mary’s a partner that understands the compliance and administrative complexity of paying and supporting international athletes correctly — reducing risk and giving administrators confidence that every payment is structured and documented the right way. At the individual level, each international Gael gains personalized, one-on-one support to navigate their own tax situation, understand what they owe and what they can reclaim through treaty benefits, and build a financial foundation that travels with them wherever their career leads.

That support is anchored by real expertise. Scout’s international tax work is led by Head of Tax Thad Madden, who brings 38 years of experience at the IRS to the needs of Saint Mary’s athletes.

“I spent nearly four decades inside the IRS, and I can tell you the rules facing international athletes are some of the most misunderstood in the system,” said Thad Madden, Head of Tax at Scout. “These students shouldn’t have to figure out nonresident filing and tax treaties on their own. My job is to make sure Saint Mary’s and every one of its international athletes gets it right — and keeps what they’re entitled to keep.”

“Supporting international athletes isn’t a feature you bolt on — it takes real expertise at both the institutional and individual level, and that’s what we built Scout to deliver,” said Michael Haddix Jr., CEO and Founder of Scout. “With leaders like Thad on our team, Saint Mary’s athletes are in the best possible hands. We’re proud to support the Gaels and the athletes who travel across the world to compete for them.”

Through the partnership, Saint Mary’s international athletes gain access to Scout’s specialized international tax services — including nonresident tax advising, tax ID assistance, return preparation and filing, and guidance on how NIL income is taxed for non-U.S. citizens — alongside financial literacy education, one-on-one support, and a secure mobile app to manage taxes, savings, and long-term planning.
